Puggy Pearson dead at 77

Poker Affiliate Program

Poker has lost one of its true legends.

Inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in 1987, Walter Clyde "Puggy" Pearson died April 12 at the age of 77.

Pearson played in the first World Series of Poker in 1970 and won the event in 1973 for a $130,000 first prize.

Poker Affiliate

Many do not know about his influence on the game. Pearson created the freeze-out tournament structure that the majority of players play today. In the freeze-out structure, players receive only one starting stack of chips and once they bust out, their tournament is over. In 1972, the freeze-out became the format for the World Series of Poker.

Even in childhood, Pearson was seen as a gambler, an innovator and a risk-taker.

As one of 10 children, Pearson left school at age 10 to help his family in Tennessee. Around that time, Pearson was showing some friends his newfound talent of walking on his hands. Some floorboards gave way, causing Pearson to fall, hitting the ground face-first. His nose, flattened by the fall, was the inspiration for his famous nickname "Puggy."

Poker Room Online

Pearson was also known for his sense of humor and provided one of the best poker quotes in history: "I'll play any man from any land any game he can name for any amount he can count ... provided I like it."

Professional poker player Mark Seif spoke to the poker great only a few times but took a tremendous amount away from the colorful character.

"Puggy once said, 'The best thing a Poker player can do is find a great woman. It will take his game to new levels.' I did that and found he was absolutely right."

Seif heeded Pearson's advice and recently tied the knot.

"Puggy kept things in perspective," Seif said. "He knew how important it was to control your inner demons. He was a smart man."

Poker Room

Pearson will be missed in poker circles, especially the final table of the WSOP main event, where he routinely sang prior to the beginning of the final day of play.

Pearson was born Jan. 29, 1929, in Adairville, Ky. He is survived by his companion of 16 years, Simin Habibian of Las Vegas; his daughter, Andrea Elaine Phelan of Nashville, Tenn.; a son, Stephen Mark Pearson of Las Vegas; one grandson, Walter Frank Phelan of Nashville; a brother, J.C. Pearson of Las Vegas; and two sisters, Bobbie Jean Bailey of Florida and Gladys Gracie Pearson of Clarksville, Tenn.

A woman who had never played a live poker event before won the Betfair Poker Ladies Night Final. It was her first visit to London and now she will be going to Las Vegas for the World Series of Poker.

The event was the highlight of a month of online tournaments and promotions as Betfair Poker searched for the Betfair Poker Goddess.

Despite having never been involved in a live poker event, 30-year-old Angela Thacker, from Halifax U.K., was crowned the Betfair Poker Goddess. She was presented with a giant plane ticket by Betfair’s Head of Poker Ben Fried.

Angela commented, “It’s brilliant, absolutely brilliant. I’ve never been to London before, let alone Las Vegas. This is my first experience and I’ve absolutely enjoyed it. I flew over here and I had a blast.”

Betfair Poker’s Ben Fried was impressed by the positive atmosphere surrounding the event. “The sportsmanship and camaraderie between the players was fantastic. Remember poker is fun, and these ladies certainly had some of that.

Twenty Four Hours of Poker ... By the Numbers

By Aaron Todd

I started playing poker at 12:28 p.m. on Saturday, April 22 and played the last hand of a $1/$2 modified H.O.R.S.E. cash game just over 24 hours later. Oh yeah, since we hadn't had quite enough at that point, we played a $5 No Limit Hold'em Tournament to cap the experience.

For the last few days, I've struggled to come up with something coherent to say about the experience. In fact, I've been struggling to come up with anything coherent to say about anything. Pretty much all I've been able to write is "Poker," which, thanks to one player, became the catchall phrase for the group at approximately 2 a.m.

The Godfather, a man who refuses to be referred to by his given name in print, who traveled all the way from upstate New York, was the man behind this movement. Win a big pot? "Poker." Lose on a suck-out on the river? "Poker." Catch trip aces in razz? "Poker." Taking a bathroom break? "Poker."

Three days later, my brain is finally returning to normal, or at least my version of normal. Now that I've had a chance to analyze the experience, here's a breakdown of the 24-hour poker game by the numbers …

poker affiliate marketing

15: People who took part in the game
3: People who played for the full 24 hours
5: People who started at 12:28 p.m. on Saturday
8: Largest number of people playing at any given time
6: People playing at 12:28 p.m. on Sunday
6.4: Average number of people at the table
4: People in the No-Limit Tournament, including all three players who played for 24 hours
1: People allergic to our cat … sorry Frank!
150: Total man hours spent at the poker table by the group
4: Total woman hours spent at the poker table
3: Episodes of Star Wars played by our VCR
3: Times The Godfather said "Oh, this is the one that starts with words scrolling up the screen and then pans to spaceships in the sky."
2: Times we played the Rounders DVD
368: Miles driven by The Godfather to attend
872: Times the word "Poker" was said
3: Straight flushes showed down
5: Hands won with quads
20: Pushups I did at 3:30 a.m.
3: Variations of H.O.R.S.E. suggested by the group (including H.O.S.E.R., adding Pineapple for H.O.R.S.E. P. and adding a wild card game for W.H.O.R.E.S.)
12: Donuts brought by Liam at 4:25 a.m.
2: Rugby games played by Ryan prior to arriving
60: Pints of beer in a quarter barrel of Budweiser
52: Approximate number of pints consumed
10: Approximate number of pints consumed by Noah
13: Estimated liters of flatulence expelled in my living room
8: Estimated liters of flatulence expelled by just two players … thanks Shobu and Akin
64: Ounces of crackers and cookies consumed by the group
0: Ounces of vegetables consumed by the group

I lost eight hours of sleep and a few bucks along the way, but overall I think the experience was worthwhile, if only for the social aspect of the game.

poker affiliates

I doubt I'll ever want to play poker (or do anything for that matter) for that long again. But who knows, maybe by the time I finish catching up on all my lost sleep, I'll forget about how hard it's been to function these last few days and only remember how much fun we had along the way.

All I know is I'm glad it's over. Poker.

2006 WPT World Championship: Final Table

Poker Affiliate Program

The Tower Room at the Bellagio was the locale for the final table of the WPT World Championship where dozens of media reps and hundreds of die hard poker fans showed up to soak in the largest event in the history of the World Poker Tour. Six players survived a field of 606 who all bought in for $25,000. After six days of intense poker, they were ready to play for the record $3.7 million first place prize.

The seven day event started last Tuesday as some of the top pros in poker showed up to the Fontana Room overlooking the Bellagio fountains, hoping to cash record prize pool worth over $14 million. James Van Alstyne ended Day 5 and Day 6 as the chipleader. He gave it up a few times on both days, but managed to survive the day at the top in chips. Men the Master started Day 6 as one of the short stacks and hung on to make it to the final table. England's Roland de Wolfe won the WPT Paris event at the Aviation Club in July. He's seeking his second victory on the WPT this year.

Here's the final table seat assignments with chipcounts:

Seat 1: Joe Bartholdi (Dan Diego, CA) $7.135M

Seat 2: Roland de Wolfe (London, England) $1.86M

Seat 3: Men "The Master" Nguyen (Bell Gardens, CA) $1.490M

Seat 4: Claus Nielsen (Aarhaus, Denmark) $5.875M

Seat 5: James Van Alstyne (Las Vegas, NV) $8.07M

Seat 6: Davidson Matthew (Toronto, Canada) $5.765M

James Van Alstyne won the first pot, but lost the first monster pot of the day to Joe Bartholdi. It was worth over $7.2 million. On a board of 4-4-3-A-6, Van Alstyne mucked after Bartholdi showed 8-8. After he won that pot Bartholdi took over the chipleader with over $9M in chips, while Van Alstyne slipped to $5M.

Poker Room Online

Men the Master moved all in and uttered his trade mark phrase, "All you can eat, Baby!" He didn't get any action and only picked up the blinds and antes. Roland de Wolf's tight image hurt him early. He did not get any action with his pocket Kings.

On the 15th hand of the final table, Men the Master and Claus Nielsen were both all in preflop. Claus had Q-Q and Men's pocket tens were dominated. Men's hand did not improve and he finished in 6th place winning $292,915.

Play slowed down after Men the Master busted, but at the first break Joe Bartholdi built his stack to over $10M. Roland de Wolfe was the shortstack with $1.845M. James Van Alstyne slipped to 4th in chips. He came over to talk and said, "I'm playing the worst poker of my life."

Poker Room

James Van Alstyne would lose the majority of his stack when he made a move with K-6 and pushed all in. He was called by Roland de Wolf's K-K, which held up. Van Alstyne would be eliminated when he moved all in with A-K a few hands later. Joe Bartholdi called and flopped a 10 with J-10. Van Alstyne busted out in 5th place and picked up $439,375. Joe Bartholdi increased his stack to $11.3M.

Roland de Wolfe went on a rush and built up his stack until he tangled with Claus Nielsen. Roland de Wolf had A-10 and doubled up Nielsen's 9-9. Claus Nielsen jumped to $6M in chips but he wouldn't last too much longer. Joe Bartholdi rivered a flush with Kd-9d against Nielsen who caught a Queen on the river with A-Q. He finished in 4th place and won $659,120.

With three players remaining, Joe Bartholdi held a 3 to 1 chip lead over both players. He had $18M to their $6M each.

Roland de Wolfe had moved all in with 6-6 and was called by Joe Bartholdi who held Q-Q Bartholdi flopped a set but de Wolf picked up a gutshot on the turn. The river didn't help de Wolfe and he was eliminated in 3rd place. He won $1,025,205, which is not bad for third place. Joe Bartholdi increased his stack to over $21 million. Davidson Matthew had about $8 million in chips.

Matthew picked up his aggression. He reraised all in twice against Bartholdi who folded on both instances. At one point after he won an $8 million pot, Matthew took over the chiplead. He would not have it for too long.

On the 42nd hand of heads-up play, a winner was decided. Joe Bartholdi made a tremendous call against Davidson Matthew. On a board with of Ah-9c-8h, Davidson Matthew re-raised all in with 10h-4h and a flush draw. Joe Bartholdi thought about calling for a few minutes and even stood up to think. He decided to call with 9-5o. Bartholdi had middle pair and his read was right. Matthew was just on a flush draw. The turn and river did not improve Matthew's hand and he ended up finishing in second place.

Davidson Matthew is a small business owner from Toronto, Canada won his seat in the WPT World Championship after he won a $25 online satellite. He turned $25 into $1,903,950. For first place, Joe Bartholdi picked up $3,760,165 and he was awarded a free seat in the 2007 WPT Championship. Congrats to Joe for an amazing victory. He left the Bellagio $3.7 million richer. History was made at the Bellagio once again as the fourth season of the WPT concluded.

Here's the payouts for the final table:

1 $3,760,165

2 $1,903,950

3 $1,025,205

4 $659,120

5 $439,375

6 $292,915

Also, Congrats to Gavin Smith for winning the World Poker Tour Player of the Year.

605 players, a $15 million prizepool and tons of excitement

One of the premier events in poker, the World Poker Tour World Championships swung into gear this week for the fourth time at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino in Vegas with 606 contestants and a massive prizepool of $15 125 000.

Poker Affiliate

For the man or woman who beats 605 opponents from 40 countries in games taking place over 6 days the rewards are huge - a $3.8 million first prize. Players placed 2 to 4th stand to clean up as well, with million dollar or more individual payouts.

At a $25,500 buy-in the tournament is certainly not the cheapest around, but for prestige, prizes and media coverage it is pretty hard to beat.

"The WPT World Championship is considered the toughest tournament in the world to win if you consider the caliber of the competitors," says Steve Lipscomb, founder and CEO of WPT Enterprises, Inc. "At a cost of $25,500 to get to the table, you have to be a very accomplished poker player. You've either built a very solid bankroll or you've outlasted thousands in satellite tournaments. No doubt this final table will be a cliffhanger."

The WPT World Championship crowns the WPT's fourth season, bringing the total prize money for the 17 tournaments to $85,120,000. The tournaments currently airing on the Travel Channel every Wednesday night at 9 p.m. have provided the 20 newest WPT Poker Millionaires.

By the time the final table assembles on Monday, April 24, at 4 pm those 606 contestants will have been whittled down to six and from those six one will be the new champ.

Show Picks Up Right Where the WPT Leaves Off

The Professional Poker Tour (PPT) has finally found its time slot.

The new show that features only the proven best tournament poker players will premiere Wednesday, July 5, at 9 p.m. local time on the Travel Channel. The series starts a week after the finale of the fourth season of the World Poker Tour airs, which ensures that the Travel Channel will air 44 straight weeks of poker. PPT will air for 24 weeks.

poker affiliate marketing

The PPT, which was created and produced by WPT Enterprises, is an invitation-only series. Players need to carry a PPT card in order to play in the events. The player’s card is similar in concept to the card professional golfers need to earn to play in PPG-sponsored events.

Players who are lucky enough to have earned PPT cards play in freerolls in which the winner receives $200,000. Different criteria were weighed when the 250 PPT cards were awarded. One-, two-, and three-year cards were given to players.

Three-year cards went to all WPT champions, anyone who made more than one final table on the WPT, players who finished first, second, or third in the $25,0000 WPT championship event, the top 10 players on the WPT Player of the Year list, all winners of the World Series of Poker championship event, the top three finishers in the 2003 or 2004 WSOP championship event, the top 10 players in the Card Player Player of the Year standings for 2002 and 2003, the top 10 players in Phil Hellmuth’s Champion of the Year standings for 2002 and 2003, members of the Poker Hall of Fame, and members of the WPT Poker Walk of Fame.

poker affiliate marketing

Two-year cards went to players who finished fourth, fifth or sixth in the WPT $25,000 buy-in event or the WSOP championship event in 2003 and 2004. One-year cards went to players selected by the advisory committee, the top 10 players in the European player standings, and to the WPT commentators.

In addition, eight cards go to the host casino and 10 are awarded by WPT Enterprises.

Each tournament will have a prize pool of $500,000 provided by the PPT producers. At each tournament, 132 players will start out at 15 tables and only the top six players get paid.

Poker Room Online

Other changes to make the tournament more exciting for viewers have been enacted. Instead of only showing the final table, the entire tournament will be shown from start to finish. Every time there’s an all-in, camera’s will rush over to the table to catch the moment.

Poker Room Online

At the final table, players will have to think and act fast thanks to a 90-second time limit for each decision. A player may go to a “time bank” once during the final table. Five PPT events have already been played at Foxwoods Resort Casino, Commerce Casino, Bay 101, Bellagio, and The Mirage. The show is hosted by two-time WSOP bracelet winner Mark Seif and actor and poker enthusiast Matt Corboy.

The show has taken a bumpy path to the television screen. While shopping for a broadcast deal, WPT Enterprises filed suit against the Travel Channel in September claiming that the Travel Channel had interfered with WPT Enterprises’ right to negotiate an agreement with another broadcaster.

Poker

It took until the end of January for the Travel Channel and WPT Enterprises to resolve their differences and come to an agreement.

Poker Player Wins Two Tournaments

Alan Goodrum overcame a massive chip stack deficit at the final table to cap off an extraordinary week of poker which saw him take out both the Peter Peko Memorial Tournament and the New Zealand Poker Champs Main Event.

poker affiliate program

Earlier in the evening Alan had been languishing behind eventual runner up player; Nick "the Gun" Nicolau, with only two thirds the number of chips, before calling his bluff with a flush. Once the momentum swung his way, he never looked back and went on to win holding an unsuited 9 and 10.

Alan took home $62,000 and a seat at this year's WSOP Main Event at Harrah's Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas for his efforts. "It's just an amazing feeling. To win the Peter Peko poker title earlier in the week and then to go on and take out the big one is just unbelievable," commented Goodrum.

The New Zealand Poker Champs are hosted by Kiwi Casino Poker's parent company the land based Christchurch Casino. The Christchurch Casino was the first casino in New Zealand to offer poker on its gaming floor, and hosted the inaugural New Zealand Poker Championships that same year. Since then the tournament has gone from strength to strength with this year's tournament attracting a record field of over 150 including current WSOP Champion Joe Hachem and 2006 Crown Casino Aussie Millions Champion Lee Nelson.

"It was like multi tabling online as a spectator" commented Kiwi Casino Poker management, "And with the big screen and commentary you could follow the action around."

poker affiliate marketing

The week kicked off with a Celebrity Poker Tournament for charity, which saw local celebrities going head to head for charity. The final was a show down between singer James Reid and international cricketer Brendan McCullum. The eventual winner was Brendan McCullum who picked up $20,000 for his charity, Plunket, while James Reid entertained the crowd with a selection of his songs after the tournament finished.

With the celebrity tournament over, the real poker action got underway beginning with the Canterbury Champs where local boy Matt Lawry saw off Craig Daken from Auckland to keep the trophy at home. This was followed by the Peter Peko Memorial Tournament, a Pot Limit Holdem'/Omaha event held in memory of Peter Peko, the seven times Australian Poker Champion widely considered to be the best poker player to have come out of New Zealand. This was another hotly contested tournament with Alan Goodrum once again proving too strong for the rest of the field.

The next two events on the schedule were the New Zealand No Limit Omaha and South Island Champs. The New Zealand No Limit Omaha Championships was the first tournament of its kind held anywhere in the world and proved hugely popular. Following the conclusion of the South Island Champs the players were treated to a dinner where they were entertained by New Zealand comedian and avid Poker Player Mike King, and had the opportunity to question current WSOP Champion Joe Hachem.

The main event was run in two heats of over 75 where the field of 150 was whittled down to 40 for the following day. Early casualties in the first heat included 2006 Crown Casino Aussie Millions Champion Lee Nelson. Joe Hachem made it through to the next day, but by midnight only Goodrum and Nicolau remained.

Privileged Prince Harry Plays Poker

First Paris, and now Prince Harry- it seems that poker has become the game of choice for über privileged, hard-partying whippersnappers across the world. Accordingly, Prince Harry reportedly picked up something of a poker habit while studying at the Sandhurst Royal Military Academy, from which he graduated last week.

Harry learned how to play Texas Hold 'em by other cadets at the academy. The boisterous prince reportedly excelled at the card game right off-the-bat. For better or worse, however, young Harry was not able to turn his new poker hobby into any sort of financial profit, as real money card games are strictly forbidden for recruits.

The marketing revolution has taken the business away from the big corporate advertisers and allowed it to be spread amongst even the least experienced persons. From teenagers to pensioners, everybody is able to get involved in one of the most exciting financial opportunities online, known as affiliate marketing.

Poker Affiliate Program

Affiliate-marketing programs have revolutionised the way in which industries can reach out to a potential audience. Through commission based payments, the program looks to protect not only the affiliates but those who advertise through the program. However like all affiliate programs, it is not just the primary site that benefits from the advertising programs. The affiliate stand in line to earn a significant amount of money, without any prejudicial employment questions and without even needing to have any knowledge of the advertising world. The affiliate program is free to sign up to, so it does not matter how much capital you have to invest. All that is required is a website and a will to do a little work. In the sports betting affiliate program, the affiliate earns a percentage of the money generated by each of the new customers that they attract to the site. This percentage is not for a limited period, it stretches for the entirety of the players stay on the site. This makes the earning opportunities for an affiliate boundless, there are no limits to the amount of revenue an affiliate can make. By attracting more and more players the affiliate makes more money, therefore it is in an affiliates best interest to attract as many people as possible. However not only does the affiliate earn money, but the sports betting site profits from the influx of new custom. Therefore both parties can earn money, just by an affiliate hosting a few advertisements.

According to Darren Tigner of Burn 'N Turn Poker, the Texas Hold' Em events were a great fund-raising activity for several nonprofit organizations.

"It's been a tremendous success. Last week's tournament put us over $80,000 raised for nonprofit organizations," Tigner said as the series was wrapping up a Philo Athletic Boosters event Saturday afternoon at the Eagles aerie on Market Street. "We have a lot of cash table players and a lot of tournament players."
The series is based upon how the players finish in individual festivals run by area nonprofit 501c(3) organizations. Burn 'N Turn Poker does not run the tournaments.

Randy Jackson of Zanesville won the series championship, which had more than 160 people signed up. He totaled 20,275 points and finished well ahead of runner-up John Catanzaro (18.450) and Tammy Pulley (17,875) to win the championship.

Jackson believed he could win the series title prior to the first event, but succinctly stated it takes more than skill to become champion.

"You have to be lucky and good. You can be just one or the other," said the 35-year-old Jackson. "It doesn't matter how good you are, you aren't going to win without the cards. That and patience. Sometimes I go 20 hands without playing. It's hard to sit that long without doing anything. Patience is a good thing to have."

Jackson was one of few players in the series to sport sunglasses during the competition. He sported the shades for a greater level of comfort.

Jackson won a trip to Las Vegas to watch the World Series of Poker for three nights for winning the competition. Jackson, who is moving to Arizona for work in the paralegal field, is giving the trip to his mother and stepfather.

Jackson held a commanding cumulative points lead going into the final weekend of play, then wrapped up the title by earning 1,000 points through being a member of Friday's team competition. Bob Ross and T.J. Johnson were Jackson's teammates.

Pulley, easily the top female finisher in a predominantly male-oriented competition, fits right in at the competitions.

"They treat me like a poker player. They don't see me as a female," said Pulley, who will receive a boat trip to a casino in Indiana for finishing third.

Pulley's consistency, with several top-10 and top-25 finishes including a fourth-place in a recent event near Warsaw, helped her build large point totals. Pulley plays her hands based in large part to feeling.

"Just following instincts. It's not necessarily thinking you have the best hand; it's following what you feel," Pulley said.

The tournaments, which raised as much profit as $3,000 and $6,000, appeal to players for a variety of reasons.

"It's a mental challenge. You've always got to use your brain during this ..." Catanzaro said.

"I've met a lot of cool people through this," Jackson said. "It's something to do on the weekends. It's a nice change of pace."

The Southeastern Ohio Poker Championship Series will begin Thursday and Saturday at Newark Catholic High School. The series is expected to reel in players from a larger area. Many of this past series' players will participate in the new tournament but expect to play less frequently due to other commitments this summer.
