A rookie poker player chases $10m poker prize

John, a rookie poker player has beaten competition from more than 1,000 players to win a place at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. Computer science graduate John McCann, 30, is due to fly out today for the competition, which runs from Wednesday until August 10, and will battle it out against 7,000 other players for the $10 million first prize.

Mr McCann said: "I started playing at friends' houses, then in Casino Online where I heard about the World Series. It costs $10,000 to enter the competition. I didn't have that sort of money so I beat 1,094 people in a competition on the internet and the prize was a ticket to Las Vegas and a place in the main event."

Poker aids family in supporting daughter with rare disorder

Josie's Journey Poker tournament was trying to raise money for a little girl with a very rare, dangerous genetic disorder. Josie Martin was born with Jarcho Levin Syndrome. The disorder restricts lung function and requires surgery twice a year.

While his daughter's journey is a long one, Josie's father Shawn, is amazed at the generosity shown to his family. The family used to go to Texas for the surgeries, but they are now able to go to Kansas City. Each surgery costs $5,000. The poker tournament raised $1,000.
