Good News for Online gambling Firms

Poker Group Suggests Legalizing, Taxing Internet Games

In response to a bill that would ban Internet poker, the nonprofit Poker Players Alliance has released a study making a case for the online games to be legalized and taxed by the federal government.

The poker industry study found that more than $3 billion in federal and state revenues could be raised if Internet poker was regulated and taxed in the United States. The alliance asked for Congress to create a bipartisan commission to examine all online gaming. The alliance said that Internet gambling is regulated in more than 80 countries and jurisdictions, including the United Kingdom, which passed legislation in 2005 to regulate and tax Internet gambling.

Online gambling could roll in big payoff

As USA TODAY properly noted in its editorial on Internet gambling, prohibitions don't work. Legislation passed by the U.S. House of Representatives that seeks to ban online poker and other forms of Internet gambling, while making exceptions for horse racing and online lotteries, will not effectively deter youth gambling or prevent compulsive gambling. In fact, such an approach would only exacerbate these problems.

In addition, taxing online poker can raise significant revenue. An economic analysis commissioned by our organization revealed that if the government were to regulate and tax the Internet poker industry, it has the potential to raise more than $3.3 billion in annual revenue for the federal government and $1 billion more for state coffers.

The difference between starting your poker career off as a winner or as a loser is Game Selection. Choose the appropriate game for your bankroll and your skill level and you will be rewarded with a long and winning career in poker.

Then, make sure you have an adequate bankroll for the stakes of the game. Normal game fluctuations dictate that playing in a $3/$6 game with a $50 total bankroll will normally see you leaving the table broke and looking to deposit more money. A good rule of thumb is to have a bankroll of about 20 times the big bet to consistently play at a particular limit.

The victory was the 59-year old Zwerner's first at the WSOP and the first time he'd ever cashed in a WSOP event. Zwerner hadn't played in a WSOP event in nearly 15 years, but was inspired to play the event once again when his 21-year old son took a serious interest in the sport. His largest victory before Wednesday was a sixth place finish in a $1000 Omaha Hi-Low Split tournament at the 2000 L.A. Poker Classic to win $3,015.

Poker rivals spitting chips

A poker war has erupted between Melbourne poker king Joe Hachem and the latest champ, Mark Vos. The fiery Queenslander surprised the gaming world this week, winning $1.08 million in a poker tournament in Las Vegas. He has now revealed he and Hachem are arch enemies and don't talk. Vos this week became an instant millionaire after beating the world's best at a World Series of Poker tournament. Just a day earlier, Joe Hachem finished second in another Las Vegas World Series of Poker tournament and collected $345,000.

Vos's and Hachem's successes just 24 hours apart have intensified a long rivalry between Australia's top two players. The dispute is believed to have started over a message sent on an internet poker site, which escalated to heated comments between the pair over the past few months. Poker sources say the two high-rollers cannot stand each other. Vos and Hachem are to compete against each other several times in the next few weeks in a series of poker tournaments in Las Vegas.

Hachem is on the hunt again

The Australian media were jubilantly reporting the latest World Series of Poker triumphs of last year's multi-million dollar champion Joe Hachem this week, as the 2006 action on the world's biggest poker event ran the opening competitions in its 45 event schedule.

The Melbourne-based poker king is in the money again after winning $345 000, albeit as a runner up this time in a No Limit Hold Em WSOP event. The former chiropractor, who won $10 million playing poker almost a year ago, outlasted 822 poker players to finish runner-up in this week's event, and expressed disappointment at not clinching the top spot and the $649 000 prize purse that went with it.

No kids' poker

The promotion of a Texas Hold 'Em "camp" for kids as young as 10 years old has prompted Solicitor General John Les to tighten up gambling regulations in B.C. The amendment defines any commercial effort to train minors to gamble as a "gaming service," requiring the provider to register under the Gaming Control Act. Registration can be refused, and companies operating without it can be fined as much as $100,000.

Australian poker pro Mark Vos wins $803,274 at WSOP Event #6

At the tender age of 23, Mark Vos made a personal decision. He will spend the next five years of his life “working” and the five years immediately after that “relaxing.” Vos’ plan is to play poker (which he defines as “work”) and then take the second-half of a decade off. It’s an unconventional career path to say the least.

If “work” means coming to Las Vegas to play in the World Series of Poker, overwhelming a near-record field of 1,919 players, and earning $803,274 in just three days, then – then, there are certainly worse jobs. Indeed, Vos won the $2,000 buy-in no-limit hold’em championship and earned his very first WSOP gold bracelet. Vos, a college student-turned-poker player from Brisbane became only the third Australian national ever to win an event at the World Series of Poker.

Poker Show donates a $100 000 TV sponsorship package to charity

William Peraza Jr., CEO of "The CEO Poker Show" is a gambling man who believes in putting benefits up front for charity instead of just talking about it. "The CEO Poker Show" sponsorship package can be bid on in the Giving Works area of eBay. A percentage of proceeds raised will be donated to Best Buddies Charity, based in Miami, Fla. World Series of Poker Starts with Record Fields

If anyone is still under the impression that poker is a fad or that the big-money poker tournament is a bubble waiting to burst they should check out the action at the 2006 World Series of Poker. The first open invitation event for this year's WSOP attracted a record-setting 2,776 players.

The $1,500 buy-in No-Limit Hold'em event featured a first prize of $757,839. That's an incredible number for a tournament with a relatively small buy-in. Those early estimates of an 8,000 strong field for the $10,000 main event, which starts on July 28 now look a little conservative to us, if anything.

Joe Hachem is in the money again

Australian poker king Joe Hachem is in the money again after winning $345,000 in a Las Vegas tournament. The former Melbourne chiropractor, who won $10 million playing poker almost a year ago, yesterday out-lasted 822 players to finish runner-up in the World Series of Poker event.

After his massive windfall, Hachem said he was just a little disappointed he didn't win the tournament and the $649,000 first prize. Hachem looked set to beat Californian Russ "Dutch" Boyd in the final but the turn of the final card, a five of diamonds, gave the American two pair and the tournament.

Latest 2006 WSOP Results - Hachem Doing Well Again

Joseph Hachem, who won the 2005 World Series of Poker main event, is busy proving that result was no fluke. At the 2006 WSOP he has just made the final table of Event #5, the $2,500 NL Hold'em Short-Handed 6/Table where he will take on "Dutch" Boyd after Daniel Negreanu busted out in 8th spot.

Hachem is a genuine poker talent, and it would be a wonderful achievement if he were to win a second bracelet at the 2006 World Series of Poker. However, he faces an uphill task here. Boyd, who was the brash "leader" of The Crew - a group of young guns who stormed the poker world in 2004, has a substantial chip lead, which he has held since eliminating Negreanu. But, if anyone can beat him from this position it would be Hachem, who proved how adept he is at short-stack tournament poker play at last year's Main Event.

Sexton announced that he is to donate half of his Tournament of Champions prize purse - that's a stunning $500 000 - to five charities.

Sexton's generous donation sets an example in his initiative to persuade poker pros and businesses to donate large amounts to charity because of the benefits that it could bring to both the poker community and the world. In previous interviews, he has noted: "The most ardent adversaries of poker could not be against poker if we were to start donating huge bucks to worthwhile charities.
